TRAINING
Tom ran a fellowship scheme for journalists covering labour migration in Jordan, Lebanon and the Gulf States in partnership with the
International Labour Organisation (ILO) from 2017-2019. Over 20 journalists took part in the programme, conducting investigations, producing podcasts and writing op-eds in publications as diverse as the Jordan Times to the New York Times, from BBC World Service Radio to Arabic podcast startup – SOWT and much else besides. In December 2017, the National Commission of Romania for UNESCO hosted a week on training for journalists from 16 European countries on the reporting on refugees and migrants. Journalists from and media representatives from 16 countries took part in the training: Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and UK. Tom Law delivered a training session on Day 5 entitled, “Moving Stories: How to get the story but do no harm”. The training drew on the findings of the EJN’s three recent studies on migration reporting, as well as the EJN test for hate speech.
GUIDELINES & CURRICLUM DEVELOPMENT
Tom led a team that developed an online toolkit on migration reporting in partnership with European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA), launched in June 2019:

Tom has advised on curriculum development on migration reporting in with partners in Czech Republic, Estonia, Slovakia, and Spain.

While at the Ethical Journalism Network, Tom helped develop a
guide for media and journalists to report on migration.

ADVOCACY
Tom has spoken about migration reporting at forums organised by IOM, EU, Council of Europe, UN, ICMPD & others.

Changing the Narrative – Media Representation of Refugees and Migrants in Europe
Tom Law spoke on a panel discussion on 16th November at Brussels Press Club on media representation of refugees and migrants in European media to launch the results of the “refugee reporting” project.The project’s co-organisers are the Churches Commission for Migrants in Europe and the World Association for Christian Communication Europe region.
