PR & Communications

At the Ethical Journalism Network Tom's responsibilities include:

Advocacy, campaigns and policy:
  • Leading the EJN’s international media ethics campaigns on hate speech, media literacy, migration reporting, good governance & self-regulation in media, through public speaking, conducting broadcast and other interviews and delivering training, seminars and workshops.
  • An active member of the Council of Europe’s committee of experts on quality journalism in the digital age: https://www.coe.int/en/web/freedom-expression/msi-joq
  • Speaking at forums organised by IOM, EU, Council of Europe, OSCE, UN, ICMPD & others.
  • Part of delegation to Sudan with senior figures from press freedom groups that met with both Vice Presidents, Minister of Information, members of the opposition, civil society and journalists.
 
Communications and events:
  • Development of EJN resources (blogs, publications, handbooks, toolkits, videos, infographics) and promoting them to journalists, academics, trainers, and media development/policy community.

Publications that Tom has edited for the EJN include:

  • Saving the news: Ethics and the fight for the future of journalism (EJN, 2019)  
  • How does the media on both sides of the Mediterranean report on migration? (ICMPD, 2017) 

Growing the EJN’s audience and international network of supporters through:

  • Building and launching a new website for the organisation.
  • Delivering an online communications strategy via website, social media and newsletters.
  • Running EJN events, including a successful series at the Frontline Club in London.
